The San Francisco Bay Area Costumers' Alliance is an association of Costume Designers, Technicians, Craftspersons, Students and Educators working in professional, community, and educational theatres in the Extended Bay Area.

YAHOOGROUP:
The Costumers' Alliance yahoogroup allows us to exchange information, job listings, and advice. We use it to locate hard-to-find costume items, ask questions about costuming and makeup problems, and get advice from other members. We also exchange news about resources for costumers, such as specialist suppliers of everything from dance fabrics to size XXL frock coats, and information about shop safety, classes, job openings, budgeting... anything that might be helpful to a theatrical costumer. Alliance members (and only members) can also access our archives and get member contact information from a searchable data base. We also use the yahoogroup to announce upcoming events.

MEETINGS, EVENTS & WORKSHOPS:
A survey showed that most members value online communication with and support from their peers even more than regular face-to-face meetings. We are currently planning two general meetings a year, and occasional workshops relevant to our members' needs. Past workshops have covered such topics as How to Build a Portfolio, Toxic Products and Safety in the Costume Shop, Constructing Stretch Dancewear, Dyeing (with Amy Van Every, dyer for SF Opera), Draping (With the late Janet Arnold), Fabric Modification (With Janet Bloor of Euro Co.), ResumJ Writing, Wig Styling for Beginners (with Sharon Ridge), Silk Painting (with Natasha Foucault), and Mask Making (with Thurston James.)

Our meetings are held in various Bay Area locations, rotating South Bay, East Bay, and Peninsula meeting places whenever possible. Our general meetings are informal and are used to network and share information, ideas, and resources, but they often include a guest speaker or focus on a specific topic, as well. In addition, all members are welcome to attend and participate in steering committee meetings as they occur.

NETWORKING:
We provide a network for contact and support in what can be a stressful and isolating career, as well as a creatively challenging one.

INFORMATION EXCHANGE:
Through meetings and our yahoogroup we attempt to keep our members aware of resources (such as new products and techniques) and, of course, job openings. HOW TO JOIN:

**Our membership year runs from April 1 through March 31. All members renew on April 1.

HISTORY:
The Costumers' Alliance was founded in June, 1989. It was commissioned by NOR-CAL USITT to provide a networking / support group for the Northern California Costuming Community.

We have "grown up" and moved away from our parent group, which was a regional section of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. You do not need to be a member of USITT to join the Costumers' Alliance.
